We produce around 3500 cases (42,000 bottles), which makes Grasshopper Rock one of the larger single vineyard premium Pinot Noir labels from Central Otago.
To produce premium Pinot Noir in Central Otago, consistently, year after year, is a challenge, and the ability to do this is what will define the great vineyards.
When growing grapes on the climatic fringes, everything from frost and cold weather in spring, to summer rain and early autumn frost, conspires to disrupt our ability to consistently ripen premium quality grapes. To achieve consistent quality in these conditions requires careful site selection and intensive hands-on viticulture.
In the vineyard, we adjust our vineyard management to the season and let each year bring its own character to the wine. Weather patterns vary between years and the most subtle variation can produced different nuances in the final wine. This is the great joy of Pinot Noir and we celebrate the vintage variation. The common thread in our wine is the elegant and poised style of Pinot Noir, fine textured tannins, great length and persistence in the taste.
Gold Medal awards vintage after vintage is recognition of the potential for this vineyard to achieve greatness. It is consistent respect, not one off successes that we strive for.
Great wine stories combine special sites with attention to detail in the establishment, planning, vineyard management and winemaking.
